farming practices
We have a firm belief that quality of wine is directly connected to the spirit & ethos of a winery in regards to grape viticulture and wine production. We aim to be as transparent as possible by offering a glimpse of farming practices by growers/wineries represented in our shop. Some of these concepts are not regulated—some growers adhere to rules issued by private organizations and some do not enlist such organizations for certification yet adhere to basic or stricter principles. In the case of which they do not—we will note ‘practicing’. Most of the wineries we work with fall in line with one of the following categories:
Sustainable:
The philosophy of sustainable farming is to respect the environment by using synthetic chemical products only when absolutely necessary and then in small doses.
Organic:
Growing without the use of synthetic chemical products or artificial fertiliser. There are rules laying down what may be used in the way of nourishment and soil improvement. Genetically modfied products are prohibited.
Biodynamic:
Biodynamics is a holistic, ecological, and ethical approach to organic farming, gardening, food, and nutrition. These are based on the anthroposophist Rudolf Steiner’s principles on how to restore strength and vitality to the soil. While similar to organic farming, biodynamic farming principles have a greater focus on astrological cycles and the idea of the farm as a single ‘organism’.
Why are wines not listed as ‘natural’?
It has become harder and harder to define what constitutes a wine being ‘natural’ or not. While many of our wines are commonly understood as ‘natural’ wines, we choose to only list what we can accurately define based on the previously listed principals.
Return policy
We do not accept returns unless there is a verified issue with the wine (ie corked, faulty) presented within 30 days. Please e-mail us with any concerns or issues with your wines.
